The recently released opinion by the US Department of Justice (DOJ) on the applicability of the Wire Act to Internet Gambling will be discussed in an Oversight Hearing held by the US Senate Committee on Indian Affairs on February 9.
This will be the second hearing held by this committee on the topic of online gambling in the last three months. During the previous hearing held on November 17, 2011, tribal representatives voiced their concerns that legislation currently being considered did not provide equitable opportunities for Indian gaming interests.
According to tribal financial consultant Grant Eve, strides made since Congress passed the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act in 1988 can be jeopardized if Indian gaming interests are not considered as Internet gambling progresses in the US.
A webcast of the hearing will be made available, however a list of witnesses that will be testifying has not yet been released.
