Key Takeaways
  • Big swings and huge pots dominated Day 4 of the WSOP Main Event.
  • The money bubble burst early, but so did many big name pros including Doyle Brunson and Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi.
  • Annette Obrestad, Greg Merson and Steve Gee all have the chance to make some WSOP history as 282 players continue to Day 5.

Day 4 of the 2013 World Series of Poker Main Event will go down as a day of big swings involving massive pots.

The money bubble burst early in the day when professional poker player Farzad Bonyadi claimed the unwanted title of “bubble boy” as the final player in the field to bust without taking home a paycheck. The remaining 648 players let out a collective cheer for having made the money, before getting back to work on the felt and thinning the field.

The day also saw plenty of the players who have made headlines over the past few days head for the rail. The outstanding run of 10-time bracelet winner Doyle Brunson came to an end on Day 4 as did the roller coaster ride of Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi.

Joining them in the cashier’s line on this day were Rob Salaburu and Russell Thomas, members of the 2012 November Nine. Matt Affleck and Christian Harder's success in the Main Event continued this year, but neither were able to survive the day. Also the stories of Melanie Weisner, Allen Cunningham, Court Harrington and one time chip leader Mark Kroon all came to an end.

With every player that busts out, another comes closer to realizing their dream of reaching the final table. That includes 2012 Main Event Champion Greg Merson, who is continuing to make a deep and impressive run. 2007 WSOP Europe Main Event winner Annette Obrestad returns with over 1m in chips, planning not just to survive but to make history.

Chip leader Jon Lane sits with over 2.8m in chips, but there’s still a long way to go and a number of big name pros competing to take over, including David Benefield, Yevgeniy Timoshenko, Amir Lehavot and Brett Richey, all of whom bagged and tagged over a million chips on Day 4. While sitting in the middle of the pack right now, Vivek Rajkumar, Marvin Rettenmaier, Brandon Steven and Noah Schwartz are all serious threats to double up and make moves.

2012 November Niner Steve Gee still has chips and hopes to be able to replay his final table, as does 2001 Main Event Champ Carlos Mortensen, who is also still alive. While Shawn Shiekhan, Scott Freeman and Greg Mueller may be short on chips, when Day 5 starts and the cards are in the air, anything can happen.

Play of the 44th Annual WSOP Main Event resumes at 12PM PST with chip counts and updates to be found on WSOP.com.
