Season2 of GGPoker's Game of Gold Remains in a Limbo Season2 of GGPoker's Game of Gold Remains in a Limbo
Key Takeaways
  • Season 2 was confirmed to be in production in February last year.
  • Fans continue to search for updates, with speculation growing on Reddit and poker forums.
  • High production costs may be a factor in the delay, despite strong viewership for Season 1.
  • GGPoker has provided no new information, raising concerns about a possible quiet cancelation.

Despite many positive signals and earlier indicators, it seems like we’ll have to wait a while longer for the new season of GGPoker’s Game of Gold show.

Those who have been keeping tabs probably remember that there was an official confirmation that the production for Season 2 started back in February of last year. However, that announcement was followed by radio silence, interrupted only by an occasional (unofficial) tidbit coming from people who might know a bit more than the general public.

It’s now been almost a year and a half since that original reveal, and there are no indications whatsoever that the new season of the poker/reality show hybrid is close to dropping. Pokerfuse even tried reaching out to GGPoker, asking if there were any new developments that fans would be excited about, but we were told that, sadly, no new information was available.

What’s Holding the Game of Gold Back?

Although it’s been a while since the first season of the Game of Gold, there are still many fans out there actively looking for information about the new season and wondering what the holdup is. Every couple of months, a new Reddit thread pops up, with someone asking the same question: Is Game of Gold coming back — and when?

Looking at the success of other similar shows, most notably PokerStars’ The Big Game, it is clear there is a lot of interest in this type of programming. The first season of the Game of Gold posted some fairly impressive viewer numbers as well, so it’s quite interesting that GGPoker isn’t keener on bringing the show back for another season.

Some fans have voiced their opinion that the show may simply not be feasible for the operator. The first season certainly featured some high-end production, the price of which may not be justified by the number of views alone.

On the other hand, GGPoker is currently the largest poker site in the world, and the branding value that comes from products like Game of Gold surely transcends the dollar-to-view value.

If we move away from the cost, could the holdup be of a creative nature? The show took on a big challenge, looking to transcend the limits of poker and become appealing to wider viewing audiences. While it certainly managed to accomplish this goal to some extent, there was room for improvement.

So, maybe it is a creative struggle that’s holding the new season back. We never got real information as to what “in the production” meant, and it could be the case where creative minds behind the show were struggling to find the right concept to keep going down the path they set on in the first season.

A Delay or a Silent Cancelation?

Good things are worth waiting for, and although many fans out there are impatient to see the return of the Game of Gold, a few more months, if that’s what it takes, won’t make a difference in the grand scheme of things.

However, with no information or teasers of any kind coming from GGPoker or any of its ambassadors, the idea that the show could have been silently canceled is becoming a real possibility. That would be a disappointment, as the Game of Gold introduced some really interesting concepts that we were all eager to see grow and develop in future seasons.

The bottom line is that nobody really knows when and if the new season is coming, except for a few people who are keeping their lips tightly sealed. Is it because the GoG will be no more or because they are waiting for the right moment to surprise us all is anyone’s guess — but we (and many poker fans out there) are certainly hoping it’s the latter!
