Two months ago, Ari Borod, chief business officer for Fanatics Betting & Gaming (FBG), said the company had two goals it hoped to achieve before the end of the year — to get a sports betting license in New York, and to launch its online casino platform.
Mission accomplished. But that second goal? No one saw how that would come down the pike.
Fanatics’ acquisition of a New York sports betting license was pretty much assumed since the company acquired all of the US assets of Australia-based PointsBet Holdings Limited over the summer. New York Regulators approved transferring PointsBet’s license to Fanatics early last month.
But the debut of the Fanatics Casino platform was unusual for two reasons:
- The platform was launched in West Virginia
- It was rolled out in tandem with a new online sportsbook
