The Winning Poker Network (WPN) is to end the jackpot contribution that funds “The Beast” promotion.
From April 5, the promotion will be funded directly from rake, and all tables will be considered part of the promotion. This is not an additional contribution—a portion of the normal rake which would otherwise go directly to the operator will be used to fund the prize pool.
Currently, Beast tables are marked separately in the lobby. An additional contribution, the—“jackpot fee”—is taken from each pot where there is a flop, and this money goes to the prize fund. Players can alternatively play at normal tables, where only the rake is taken from the pot.
This extra rake has caused many regular players to ignore “The Beast” tables. The promo is similar to the extra rake taken at bad beat jackpot tables, a promotional device which has fallen out of favor over the last two years.
Instead of being separately marked, all cash game tables will become “The Beast” tables, and all players will be eligible for the promotion. The prize pool will be funded by taking $0.02 in every $0.06 paid in rake for most tables. The amount going to prize fund will be capped according to how many players are at the table.
Player points will be calculated on a contributed basis as before with a modifier for stake levels, so the incentive to play more and at higher levels remains. The change should appeal to both recreational players and higher volume players alike.
“I have a few other tricks up my sleeve but you’ll have to stay tuned for what’s next,” said WPN CEO Phil Payton in an interview with pokerfuse back in January. The changes to The Beast promotion may well be just the first of those tricks.
