Key Takeaways
  • 888poker Ontario remains the larger of the two online poker networks in Ontario three weeks after the market opened — with an average of 44 concurrent cash game players. It is almost double the combined traffic of BetMGM, bwin, and partypoker.
  • The total Ontario online poker market has less than 70 concurrent players, much smaller than many might have hoped.
  • One likely reason is that Ontario players can continue to play on global online poker sites. Both PokerStars and GGPoker continue to serve the Ontario online poker market with offshore licenses

888poker Ontario remains the larger of the two online poker networks in Ontario three weeks after the market opened, the latest cash game traffic shows.

According to GameIntel, which has tracked both 888poker Ontario and the BetMGM Ontario Network since the first week of launch, 888 remains much larger, with an average of 44 concurrent cash game players. It is almost double the combined traffic of BetMGM, bwin, and partypoker.

This makes the total Ontario online poker market less than 70 concurrent players, much smaller than many might have hoped. For example, the pair is tiny compared to the operators in Michigan (approximately 320 concurrent cash game seats filled) or Pennsylvania (around 330), despite Ontario having the larger population.

As another point of comparison, the long-standing (if little-known) Canada Poker Network — running on ancient IGT Poker software and offering poker to players in Quebec (on the LotoQuebec website), British Colombia, and Manitoba (on PlayNow) — reports average cash game traffic of almost 180 concurrent players, almost three times more than the two Ontario regulated networks combined.
